My Granddad
My Granddad was born on October 24th, 1918. He was born 6 weeks early so he was really
tiny. Apparently he could fit in a milk
jug. He was in an orphanage by the time
he was nine.
When he was 20 he lied about his age and went to war. The rules
were that he had to be 21 to go to war without his parents permission. In 1941
he was captured by the Germans on the island of Crete in Europe. He was taken to Stalag 8b, a prison camp in
Lamsdorf in Poland, where he was forced to work in underground coal mines.
He was a bit of a mischief maker; as often as possible he would
wreck the mine so the Germans couldn’t get the coal out. The conditions in the
prison weren’t great. He wasn’t given much food and he had to do a lot of
work. One day in the prison guard’s
kitchen he smelt something nice. It was
a chicken cooking. So when the guards
weren’t looking he took his chance, stuffed the chicken in his pants and ran
like the wind. He would have loved to
eat the whole chicken himself but he was very nice and shared it with about ten
other fellow prisoners.
Before he got home to
New Zealand he was forced with about 30,000 others to walk 20 – 40 km a day
with temperatures as cold as -25 degrees Celsius. Lots of other people died
along the way. He was eventually rescued
by the Americans who took him to England.
In 1945 when the war was over he returned to New Zealand
weighing just 41kg.

My Granddad and my Great Granddad’s War adventures.
In January 1941 my Granddad went to Fiji. He was in
the peace-keeping forces, He went there to protect New Zealand and
Australia from possible invading Japanese forces.
Luckily he did not face combat while he was there
however some funny things did happen:
He went for a swim one day and was excited to find
what he thought was an eel. He picked it up and held it up high showing the
locals and shouting 'look - I've found an eel'
He was surprised at their response when the people
screamed to throw it away!
It actually turned out to be a VERY poisonous sea
snake!!
Sadly my Granddad had to come home before his tour was
over as he contracted meningitis )o:
BUT luckily he did not die!!
Also my Great Granddad went to Gallipoli in 1915. It
was a very famous battle fought between the Turks (of Turkey) and a
New Zealand and Australian unit. The British had dropped our men off
at what is now called ANZAC Cove. They weren’t meant to be dropped there
and the Cove has a big cliff looking down on the beach, so lots of men died.
He was one of the lucky ones who made it home.

Mermaids
In
the year 1978 two boys were first on the scene. They wonder amongst the
stranded whales. The oldest boy had a camera-phone. He videoed his brother
standing on a whale. Midway through he turned around and videoed a pile of
seaweed. He saw it had a tail like a manatee’s. The younger brother came off
the whale and went to look at the seaweed as well .Suddenly a webbed hand shot
out of the seaweed. They ran screaming. Five minutes later the Navy came and
then they examined the seaweed. N.O.A. arrived shortly after the Navy did. N.O.A. is a marine biologist group. Three
people who worked for N.O.A. went to the scene. They found something strange.
All the whales were bleeding through their ears. They cut off some tissue from
the whales ears. All of the whale’s organs had collapsed. That was what they
expected. But what they found was that they suffered some sort of trauma. So
the three N.O.A. people did a sound test to see if the Navy was interfering
with the sound in the sea. One month later the University of Cape Town found a
body. This body was not a human’s body but something else. When the N.O.A.
people got there they started to take the body (Well what was left of it) to
the lab to be examined. They found out that it was a new creature. It had a large
spleen which means it is able to dive deep in the water. A woman at N.O.A.
tried to put the pelvis bones together. She looked at different arrangements.
Finally it hit her. She arranged the bones to look like a hand. It worked. This
creature has hands. After examining the body there were some bones left over.
Suddenly one of the N.O.A. people remembered that he had found a stingray’s
stinger in the face of a great white shark. Great white sharks don’t eat
stingrays, so this was puzzling. He arranged the bones and the stinger to look
like a spear. This creature uses spears to kill. After that the Navy took every
piece of evidence that this creature existed. All that was left was the
recording.
THE
END By Eden
My Skylander
My
mum woke me up. I was still sleeping in
my bed. She stuck it in my hand, it felt
like plastic, I opened my eyes a little.
It was Eye Brawl the death giant.
I opened my eyes
fully – “lets play” I said to Fergus and leapt out of bed.
My brother and I
rushed downstairs and started playing.
He told me to drop in.
Eye Brawl has
black armour. His story is that he was
just a flying eyeball and he met a headless giant in the underworld – they
joined forces. He has brass knuckles,
his one eye shoots lasers. He is one of
the good giants.
I was very excited to get him, I played with him all day and he has levelled up and gotten new upgrades. It was a good day.

What an inspired poem Hannah. Well done!! :)
